Australia’s public sector boards are the leaders in driving innovation, using representative governance models to succeed, according to the new edition of "All Above Board" government sector board handbook from the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

The second edition, launched by the author Julie Garland McLellan at the Canberra Public Sector Governance Conference, is a timely update providing insights into the key aspects of corporate governance, strategy, operations, ethics and risks faced daily by public sector boards.

“Strong public sector boards are vital to the Australian economy and community, and joining a public sector board can be very rewarding and vital part of any director’s career – but, in the past, some have approached it without realising the level of commitment and skill it requires,” said Ms McLellan.

“Today’s public sector boards are vibrant and varied, from a local community organisation to a multi-billion dollar telecommunication network, and can represent a real challenge for even the most experienced director.

“Once public sector appointments were seen as inferior to the commercial sector, but that is not the case as Government boards are often just as complicated and challenging with very unique burdens.”

The new edition features 46 real-life case studies providing a handy guide to fundamental matters of public sector corporate governance, including:

• How governments work with government boards;
• Key differences between private and public sector boards;
• Ethics and conflicts in the work of public sector boards; and
• Risk management and strategic planning in the public sector.

The in-depth exploration of the operation of public sector organisations makes this book required reading for current and aspiring public sector directors, as well as anyone who has to interact with government boards.

The new edition features a foreword by the Hon Nick Greiner AC, who points out: “This publication provides an accessible approach to understanding governance of single-shareholder entities – large and small, corporate and advisory – operating at the complex interface of politics, public service and the community”.
