At a recent financial industry event, the Chief Information Officer from a major Australian bank expressed her views on the changing role of IT in organisations. It seems organisations increasingly require their IT departments to assume leadership positions and become more strategic in working with ‘the business’ to push the boundaries for innovation. So are IT departments in a suitable position to take on this leading role?

“IT vendors invest a lot to stay at the forefront of their industry and are unbiased by the specifics of any particular business. This allows IT vendors to think ‘outside the box’ when innovating new IT solutions for businesses,” commented Kareem Tawansi, CEO of software development provider, Solentive Software.

“The advantage of IT departments however, is that they can harness their broader knowledge of the mechanics of their industry to the benefit of their organisation. This deeper understanding allows IT departments to be the perfect conduit between their company and the IT industry to manage IT vendors on behalf of the business,” advised Kareem.

This process will allow IT vendors to marry innovations from the IT industry with the familiarity of the business from their IT departments.
