History was made at the Adelaide Convention Centre over the weekend where AVCon (Anime & Video Game Convention) took the city by storm. Running over Saturday and Sunday, with an opening night on Friday, 24th of July, AVCon saw an influx of local Anime and Video Game fans as well as regional and interstate visitors.

”This was our biggest convention ever!" said Samantha Donnell, Promotions Coordinator for the event. "AVCon has been a yearly event for the last seven years with this year being our 8th event. The truly awesome thing is that with over 4,000 attendees we doubled our attendance from last year!”

A bonus that many attendees found entertaining was that the Vice Convener of AVCon Mitchell Chapman proceeded to get his head shaved at the closing ceremony. “He promised that if we got over 3,000 attendees he would shave his head, we hit that number about 11am on Sunday,” Samantha added.

“We were also able to help out a charity close to AVCon's heart, Games4Kids, and thanks to AVCon's maid cafe and the generosity of people at the closing ceremony we were able to raise over $2,000.00 for the charity,” said Samantha.

Shaun Talbot, Public Officer for Games4Kids, informed us that, ''Games4Kids aim is to raise money to be able to provide kids in hospitals with games and gaming equipment so that they can have a little fun in an otherwise unenjoyable place as well as introducing them to the gaming community."

Said Convener Melissa Dyer: "Team AVCon Inc (the volunteer organisation behind the convention) would like to thank their major sponsor Network Ten Adelaide, sponsors Madman, Gametraders & TAFE SA and supporters Pulp Fiction and Bickfords.

"We would especially like to thank all our volunteers without whom we would not have been able to pull off such an awesome convention.”
