For Australian VCs seeking to fill early-stage investment pipelines in 2011-12 there will be many opportunities on display from South Australia, when the Australian innovation community converges in Adelaide in October for the inaugural OpportUNIty S.A Innovation Showcase.

The Venture Capital (VC) and Private Equity (PE) industry provide the funds necessary for many technology-based companies to enter rapid growth on the back of their innovations, many of which originate from public research institutions such as Universities.

While raising finance of any sort has proven difficult over the past couple of years, 2010 was a year of consolidation and recovery for VC and PE. According to AVCAL Australian VCs raised $168 million in 2010 and managed 60 exits including 22 trade sales.

South Australia’s three public Universities have extensive experience in evaluating innovative Intellectual Property and spinning-out high growth technology companies when appropriate; companies that are eligible for, and often seek venture capital financing.

Recent examples include Ceridia Pty Ltd (drug delivery and reformulation) from the University of South Australia, SNAP Network Surveillance Pty Ltd (large-scale video surveillance) from the University of Adelaide and Thereitis Pty Ltd (3D image and data search) from Flinders University.

“An important factor for commercial success is early alignment of the expertise and capabilities of collaborators and investors with the technology under development. Doing this effectively puts the start-up company on a strong footing to leverage the resources available to it and drive a positive commercial outcome.” says Dr Andrew Milligan, Business Development Manager at Bio Innovation SA, a bioscience commercialisation company established by the SA Government.

“Events like OpportUNIty SA provide a perfect forum to showcase the capabilities and expertise that reside within the States’ research centres, while also highlighting those opportunities with long term growth potential that will be attractive to investors.”

World-class innovations from applied research activity in South Australia will be on display at the Showcase as experts from the University of South Australia, the University of Adelaide and Flinders University , come together to present their ideas, capabilities and technologies. This event will demonstrate opportunities for creating high growth technology companies on the back of ground breaking innovations that meet key investment objectives of high returns and controllable risks in burgeoning industry sectors.
