On Tuesday 14 July, the NSW Minister for Small Business, the Hon Steven Whan MP presented graduates of the Stepping Up – Advanced Equity Capital Raising program with certificates of completion.

The Stepping Up - Advanced Equity Capital Raising program is supported by the NSW State Government and aims to assist businesses in NSW to attract investment capital. Alchemy Innovation Development, a company that assists entrepreneurs to implement capital raising strategies has delivered the program.

“In an era when debt financing for small businesses is diminishing and mortgaging your home is not a viable option, equity capital raising is a proposition worth considering for many high growth and innovative SMEs,” says Dan Liszka, Managing Director of Alchemy Innovation Development.

“Most companies need to avoid taking on excessive levels of debt and have the illusion that taking on equity capital means selling off your business’ controlling interest – this is not necessarily so if the offer is structured correctly,” says Liszka.

The program was made available to businesses throughout NSW and 6 companies graduated from the Advanced Stepping-Up Equity Capital Raising program.

“60 companies applied, 8 began the program and 6 companies will be graduating from a rigorous process. It involved converting to a public unlisted company, structuring a capital raising offer, preparing a Share Offer Document, attracting a board of directors, developing a marketing campaign for the offer and listing on the Australian Small Scale Offerings Board”, says Dan Liszka.

“We are grateful to the state government for providing the support to the 6 companies. The value for the government is that the process builds better companies, which have the potential to realise their national and international goals.”

Alchemy Innovation has worked with the state government to deliver the Stepping Up program, providing 440 hours of mentoring over the past 4 months to help shortlisted companies structure a business and capital raising offer.

“The Stepping Up Capital Raising program is rigorous and really made us look at the structure of our business. It has strengthened the company and we are now ready to capitalise on our international reach” says Alan Rands, CEO HRworkbench, a company based in Newcastle delivering online HR solutions to blue-chip clients such as Qantas and Toyota.

The six companies that completed the program are:

• HomeSource Ltd
• HRworkbench (International) Ltd
• Simply Gifts Ltd
• Portland Marketing (International) Ltd
• The Wedderspoon Group Ltd
• Biodental Remin Ltd
