According to the Roy Morgan Health Monitor 54% of American women, representing an estimated 1.4 million women, who have skin cancer and 51% of women, representing 946,000 women, who have breast cancer are aged 65 years and older. Further, over 80% of women with skin cancer and nearly 80% of women with breast cancer are aged 50 years and older.

The research found that in an average year 4.4% of American women, representing an estimated 5.4 million women, report having some form of cancer. The most common forms of cancer for women are skin cancer (2.1% or 2.7 million women) and breast cancer (1.5% or 1.9 million women). Other common forms of cancer are malignant tumors, ovarian cancer and colon cancer.

If we were to draw a pen portrait of a woman with either skin cancer or breast cancer, she would be older with a lifestyle and attitude reflecting her age – both are less active and more conservative than the average American woman. Skin cancer and breast cancer does not appear to be related to income, affluence or socioeconomic status. However, skin cancer is more prevalent in the Mountain region and the Pacific region of the United States.

“This new study provides a closer look at the daily lives, activities, financial situation and media usage of American women with cancer. It also provides information about other health problems suffered by American women with cancer. By looking at the different demographics of women with different cancer, we get a better understanding of who these Americans are.”

The above findings are part of a much larger health profile study with 13,672 Americans conducted by Roy Morgan International. Comparative studies have also been conducted in Australia, UK and New Zealand. Respondents self reported having the illness or condition in the last 12 months at the time of interview.
