NetSpot, premium eLearning Technology Services Partner to education organisations within the Asia Pacific region today announced the opening of applications for its $200,000 Innovation Fund.

The Innovation Fund is part of NetSpot’s commitment to support and develop sustainable innovations for the tertiary education sector.

NetSpot Managing Director Allan Christie said one of the concerns in tertiary education in Australasia and probably globally is the sustainability of eLearning innovations.

“In recent times, various funding sources have stimulated the creation of innovative services or products in the eLearning space. But with most innovations being project based, once the funding is removed, the innovations are not sustained. Our program aims to support and ensure that these innovations are implemented and made freely available.”

The innovation has already received support from the tertiary sector with the involvement of key professional bodies in the funding program. These bodies include Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education (ascilite), Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA), Open and Distance Learning Association of Australia (ODLAA), Australasian Council on Open, Distance and E-Learning (ACODE) and Council of Australian Directors of Academic Development (CADAD).

The funding made available by NetSpot, one of the largest official Moodle Partners in the world, will be used to enhance Moodle applications with the aim of sustainability via the Moodle ecosystem. The Innovation Fund is open to institutions in the tertiary education sector based in the Asia Pacific region. The guidelines for funded projects are that it will support cross institution collaboration, be based on an existing innovation and enhance the capabilities of Moodle. Applicants may apply for funding from $10,000 - $50,000.

Moodle, an open source Learning Management System has been adopted enterprise-wide by more than one third of all Australian universities. NetSpot provides Moodle support and hosting for many of the universities as well as TAFE systems and South Australian public schools.

“NetSpot’s key foundations are its strong partnerships and support. This fund provides us with another opportunity to support and enhance the tertiary education sector with the latest technology that will be free for their usage and adoption. In addition, the fund is further enhanced with the strength of the partnerships from the associations involved,” Mr Christie said.

Further details about the fund and Expressions of Interest are available on the Innovation Fund website at Applications close on Friday 21 October 2011.
