One of Adelaide's finest historic homes - the landmark Dulwich House - has defied the property doomsayers to sell for $4,406,000, smashing previous records for the suburb for homes sold under the hammer.

Anthony Toop, along with Toop&Toop agents Peter and Simon Veitch, took this exceptional home at 1 Stuart Road, Dulwich, to auction on 2 September.

On the market for only the third time in a century, this exceptional residence was auctioned on the property's stunning corner allotment of 4,793 square metres. More than 200 bidders, punters and spectators came to witness the auction of this iconic Adelaide property.

The auction attracted nine registered bidders, two of whom were in the final race to the finish. In the end - after one hour and 20 minutes - a buyer on behalf of an anonymous bidder put her hand up for the final time to snap up this once in a lifetime opportunity for an impressive $4,406,000

"In a market that is being touted as flat, Dulwich House defied the odds and sold under the hammer for an impressive $4.406m," said Toop General Manager Mandy Wurth. "There are buyers still in the market that will pay exceptional prices for exceptional properties."

As far as local suburb records go, the sale of 1 Stuart Street, Dulwich, has blown all competition out of the water.

"It seems it (Dulwich House) has smashed the (local) record!" says Greg Topp, Chief Executive Officer of The Society of Auctioneers and Appraisers (SA) Inc.

Constructed in 1895, Dulwich House has been home to several prominent South Australians. It embraces a truly elegant lifestyle and has enjoyed iconic status for more than a century in the premium blue ribbon eastern suburbs of Dulwich, Rose Park and Toorak Gardens.

"These properties define Adelaide,” says Toop&Toop Real Estate Managing Director Anthony Toop. “The last time Dulwich House was sold was in December 1940. I remember walking past the property on my way to my grandmother's house from school and peering through the gates. It was always just such a mysterious and prestigious home that attracted so much interest from locals."

The success of the Dulwich House auction will be remembered for years to come. "What a perfect day, congratulations to all parties involved," Toop said.
