Property investment need not be restricted to the wealthy, research by Your Investment Property magazine has found. While a higher income does make it easier to save a deposit and get a loan, aspiring investors in the lower pay bracket can still kick start their portfolio.

Editor of Your Investment Property Nila Sweeney said it pays to shop around for the best deal on a home loan.

“Every lender assesses applicants differently and some are much more generous than others so make sure you do your research,” said Sweeney. “We also consulted the experts to find some alternative ways to start investing in property if you’re having trouble meeting lending requirements.”

To add to the good news, prospective home buyers don’t have to travel far from the city to find affordable areas. Your Investment Property has compiled a list of the 80 cheapest suburbs within 20km of a CBD where you can buy a property on a minimum wage.

“You often hear about how expensive property is in Australia, but our research has found you can afford a unit near the Sydney CBD on an annual income of just $32,000, which just shows that investing in property is a lot more affordable than you might think,” said Sweeney.
