The strong Aussie dollar means travel is more affordable at the moment but regardless of the exchange rate, getting a good deal on your hotel room booking is one way to keep costs down.

The rise of online booking sites has made it easier to compare hotel rates and more convenient to book your room of choice. But research by Your Money Magazine has found that no one site consistently provides the best deals. So how can you be sure you are getting the best hotel rate?

Managing editor Jackie Pearson said travellers need to do their research and be willing to ask for more.

“There is a lot of competition online at the moment with numerous booking sites fighting for your business on behalf of hotels,” said Pearson. “However you can also get big bargains dealing directly with the hotel if you know how to ask.”

Your Money Magazine’s tips on how to get the best hotel deals include:

• Compare several booking sites for the best price and then contact the hotel directly to see if they can bend their advertised rate, offer you a room upgrade or throw in some free amenities

• Avoid booking rooms during peak periods such as school holidays and Christmas. Even specifics like the day of the week will affect how much you’ll pay

• Book at the last minute for low-season as hotels are likely to still have empty rooms a few days before your check-in date and may discount heavily to fill them
