Last week Google announced yet another improvement to Adwords reporting, being top vs side ad segmentation. The functionality reports where ads appear on the results page – whether above the organic search results or off to the right side. The feature allows advertisers to now see how their ads are performing when they’re shown above search results versus on the side, allowing for better optimisation by the ability to examine the relationship between an ad’s location, and the clicks it attracts, along with conversions, costs and ultimately its overall profit impact.

Top/side segmentation searches can be performed by campaign, ad group, keyword and ad. Users can also see specifics on traffic within, Search Partners and on the Display Network Partners. Hal Varian, Chief Economist from Google comments on the importance of the top/side segmentation, “This distinction is important, since, on average, ads that appear above the search results tend to get substantially more clicks than ads that appear on the right-hand side.”
