Game development startup Odd Games has had a resounding win in the annual MEGA Digital Media Business Planning competition, taking out the Pitch Panel Prize, Best Written Business Proposal and Peer Assessed Award at the pitch event held on Friday at the Royal Institution of Australia (RiAus), Adelaide.

Founded by brothers David and Terry O’Donoghue, Odd Games is developing a game called Monster Truck Destruction for iPhone, Android and Facebook.

Other winners included Food Cloud, a social network for menu planning, and aProxymate, a platform for tutorial publishing and search.

An industry-led initiative, MEGA has been supported by the SA Government Departments of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology and Trade and Economic Development. Innovate SA and, most recently, the Royal Institution of Australia

MEGA Chair Paul Daly said that this year’s MEGA competition had not only uncovered a diverse range of smart ideas but kick-started several enterprises in the digital media arena.

“While the day is about engaging the audience and convincing the panel that the idea is a winner, the real purpose of MEGA is to encourage innovation for the long term,” Daly said.

MEGA’s mission is to increase the size and capability of the digital content and applications industry for South Australia, with past winners going on to win international awards and grants.

Since its inception in 2006, the MEGA program has showcased dozens of innovative ideas and products to potential investors. Pitch Day is the culmination of four months of work for the participants, who are coached through the process of developing an idea into a business by expert mentors.

Participants range from game developers to visual communication students to MBA graduates.

Contact Profile

Since 2006, the MEGA entrepreneurship development program has helped increase the size and skills of Australia’s digital media industries through a series of workshops and mentoring.

MEGA takes participants, who come from both a professional and student background, through a four-month process to build their creative, technical and business skills for the global market.

MEGA introduces participants to a range of industry mentors, specialist knowledge providers, and start-up assistance programs across Australia.

The MEGA program is now held in Adelaide and Sydney. In each city participants form project teams and, guided by industry presenters and mentors, develop and pitch new digital media products and services to investors, buyers, and business identities at a high profile Pitch Day.

In 2009, Peta Pash, MEGA’s national manager, won the Amy for Outstanding Contribution to the digital media industry at the 15th Annual Australian Interactive Media Industry Association (AIMIA) Awards.
