Friday, June 10th, 2011 - LJ Hooker
Twelve new designs by Queensland architects for flood-resistant homes will go head-to-head, when judges meet to decide the winner of the L J Hooker Flood Home Design Competition on Friday, 10th June.

Photographers and reporters are welcome to attend. The judging takes place between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM, in the Board Room, Room 4A, on level 4 of the Queensland State Library, Southbank, Brisbane.

The design contest is co-sponsored by:
• L J Hooker - Australia’s most recognised real estate brand;
• The Future Housing Task Force - A think tank of housing industry professionals with the goal of providing solutions to Australia’s affordability crisis;
• Archicentre – The building design and advisory service of the Australian Institute of Architects.

“Given the number of homes at risk in this country, this is literally a $63 billion problem, “said L J Hooker CEO, L. Janusz Hooker, who is one of the judges, in addition to co-sponsoring the challenge. “The architects in this competition hope to set new standards in flood-safe home design.”

Up to $63 billion of existing residential buildings, including as many as 247,600 individual buildings, are potentially at risk of inundation in Australia this century, according to Climate Change Risks to Australia’s Coast, published by the Australian Department of Climate Change.

The competition winner will establish a new standard in state-of-the-art design for homes situated in flood-prone areas, providing valuable insights and lessons for regulatory bodies, councils, builders and home owners. These lessons can greatly aid the rebuilding process in the Lockyer Valley and other flood-devastated areas across the country.

$8,000 worth of prizes will be divided amongst the winner and the first two runners up. The judging panel consists of:
• Ian Agnew, Archicentre State Manager for QLD, ACT and NSW.
• Cameron Davies, Deicke Richards, AIA Architect and Grantham Town Planner.
• Kevin Doodney, CEO L J Hooker Land Marketing.
• Mark Doonar, Tract Consultants.
• L Janusz Hooker, CEO, L J Hooker.
• Ken Mitchell, Queensland Lifestyle and Development Group
• Mayor Pam Parker, Mayor of Logan City, Queensland.
• Steve Pisani, James Hardie.
• Peter Sherrie, Excel Development Group and Nation President of the Urban Development Industry of Australia.
