When it comes to buying property, it’s easy to get caught up in the hype of the next hot spot making headlines. However, many of the nation’s most hyped areas have their hopes of growth pinned on volatile factors. Buyers who simply speculate on a highly-touted suburb are taking a big risk in the hope of an even bigger return. And research by Your Investment Property magazine has revealed that it’s not always worth it.

Your Investment Property assessed the potential of nine hyped hot spots around Australia, examining both the pros and cons of buying in the area as well as key indicators such as population growth and unemployment levels.

Editor of Your Investment Property Nila Sweeney says the hype isn’t necessarily justified.

“While hyped areas may have sound fundamentals for growth, we found that the risk factors mean that in some cases buyers should look elsewhere for a better return on their investment,” said Sweeney.

Sweeney recommends looking at areas that fly under the radar but have grounds for healthy growth potential.

“Underrated suburbs are often more affordable compared to the hot spots and while they may not be star performers, they are worth considering if you are looking for a less risky option,” said Sweeney.
