Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011 - Understanding Teenagers
The task of parenting Illawarra’s 50,000 teenagers is now easier with the launch of Understanding Teenagers, a new training and coaching service for parents.

Specialising in helping adults engage with and relate to teenagers, the Wollongong based service offers personalised coaching and workshops that equip parents to build and maintain healthy relationships with their teenagers in a culture of rapid change.

“With the rise of digital media, social networking, and mobile technology it is even more confusing for parents to know how to maintain healthy relationships with their teenagers,” said Chris Hudson, service founder, adolescent expert and former youth worker. “There is a lot of uncertainty about how to set reasonable limits while still allowing for freedom and independence.”

Research published by Australian Institute of Family Studies has shown where teenagers and parents both reported a high quality relationship; the teenagers had better social skills, fewer behavioural problems, better peer relationships, and fewer problems at school.

“Adolescence is a unique time of life for both teenagers and their parents,” said Mr Hudson. “Understanding Teenagers aims to help adults develop and maintain positive relationships with teenagers.”

With a series of workshops kicking off at the Wollongong Master Builders Club at 7:00pm on 12 May 2011, Understanding Teenagers is seeking to assist the parents of the Illawarra raise their teens with confidence.

Details of all coaching services and workshops, including those being held throughout the Illawarra during May and June, can be found at www.understandingteenagers.com.au.
