THE focus on fish has been taken to new heights at Cicerello’s Fremantle with innovative toilet aquariums giving gents something else to think about while relieving themselves.
Part of a $1.7 million refurbishment, a 1.8m tank full of colourful fish has been installed above the urinals in the men’s toilets, in addition to a curved tank at the entrance. The ladies are also catered for with an aquarium on the way into their facilities.
But a 5m long tank featuring an array of tropical fish, connecting to the two toilet areas, is the main centrepiece, tying in with the large aquariums already featured in other parts of the restaurant.
“We really wanted make a splash with this,” Cicerello’s owner Henry Liascos said. “Too many restaurants have bland and boring toilet facilities and we wanted to push the envelope by creating something unique.”
Believed to be the only toilet aquariums in Australia, Mr Liascos said matching the water theme associated with toilets and Cicerello’s own focus on things from the deep blue sea seemed obvious.
“The new aquariums give that relaxed, refreshing feel as people do what comes natural to them,” he said. “They’re an obvious talking point and they’ve certainly become a novelty in their own right, given the amount of feedback I get from tourists and other visitors.”
Speakers within the toilet areas also filter in whale songs and other marine sounds, adding to the overall atmosphere.
A three-time winner of the Fremantle Family Friendly Award, Cicerello’s was established in 1903 and is renowned as a mecca for locals and tourists, famous for its variety of seafood. The recently-unveiled Bon Scott statue also stands nearby.
