ROAD SAFETY HAZARD – CONTROL OF MOTOR VEHICLES

There are major concerns about seat belts, speed, hoons, alcohol, drugs, and vehicles themselves being a cause of road accidents, says Tony Tregale the coordinator of a support group for families having a member with an intellectual disability.

Yet, says Mr Tregale, there is no law or government regulation to restrict a vehicle being driven by a driver in unsuitable footwear – Even bare feet is not against the law!

One can be fined heavily for not wearing a seatbelt, which has little bearing on the vehicle being safely driven. Suitable foot wear does however contribute directly to the vehicle being safely driven. With unsuitable footwear, the vehicle is not under proper control, and is a danger to everyone, Mr Tregale says.

The LISA Inc organisation is especially concerned about the numerous vehicles transporting vulnerable people - those with an intellectual or multiple disability being driven every day to their various activities. Mr Tregale says that people with a disability are especially vulnerable if the vehicle is involved in an accident, as they often have little ability to help themselves.

There is an urgent need to make it unlawful to drive a motor vehicle in unsuitable foot wear, Mr Tregale says.
