The Hills hoist has been highlighted by Australia Post as one of several shining examples of great Aussie ingenuity with the new "Inventive Australia" stamp issue.

This colourfully illustrated stamp issue features eight great Aussie inventions on five stamps; the Esky, the wine cask, the Hills hoist, Speedos, Zinc cream, the B&D roll-a-door, the Victa rotary lawnmower and the Ute,which was invented by Ford.

Australian artist Stuart McLachlan, whose design work has taken him around the world, has drawn on his own experiences of growing up in suburban Adelaide to affectionately and humorously depict these inventions in a typical Aussie backyard of the 1980s.

The father in his blue singlet is mowing the lawn while the children – who are illustrations of Stuart’s own kids – swing on the Hills hoist and play in the wading pool in their Speedos and Zinc cream. Meanwhile, the mother – who is a version of Stuart’s own wife – is relaxing with her feet up on an Esky sipping some cask wine, with the roller door up and the ute sitting in the garage.

“This stamp issue reflects the great Australian inventive spirit,” said Noel Leahy, Group Manager of Philatelic, Australia Post. “These inventions have become a central part of Australian life. With constant innovation and development, they have stood the test of time and are as relevant to us today as they were to our parent’s generation.”

Several of these inventions were part of a post-war development boom that centred on suburban housing –
the backyard being the amphitheatre in which they took centre stage. While other inventions made a
temporary appearance here and there, these inventions have lasted the test of time.

“The Hills hoist is a great innovation from yesterday that stands the test of time today. It certainly has put its stamp on generations of Australians, and this recognition from Australia Post has further sealed Hills’ place amongst great Australian innovators,” stated Jennifer Hill-Ling, Chairman of Hills Industries.

Other collectable products in this issue include a miniature sheet, first day cover, stamp pack, stamp booklets, prestige booklet and maxicard set.

The issue is available at selected Australia Post outlets, via mail order on 1800 331 794 or online at
www.auspost.com.au/stamps from 19 February 2009, while stocks last.
