Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 - Belmont Sports & Recreation Club
Around the world there are hotly contested Wife Carrying competitions, and Perth will be no less exciting. Modeling the competition on the famous 12 year old event held in Sonkajarvi, Finland, the State Championships event at Belmont Sports & Recreation Club will be sure to impress. The event will run at the Club starting at 2pm.
The event will follow International Guidelines, and therefore several types of carry may be practiced: piggyback, fireman's carry (over the shoulder), or Estonian-style (the wife hangs upside-down with her legs around the husband's shoulders, holding onto his waist).
Wife Carrying is a fiercely competitive formal sport overseas, and Australia is busy making its mark in the international arena. Major wife-carrying competitions are held in Sonkajärvi, Finland (where the prize depends on the wife's weight in beer), Japan, China, UK and the USA.
Frank Lamp from the Belmont Sports & Recreation Club said, “It’s been an exciting event to organise, and we hope that many couples will get involved! The Club has a proud history and this event will help us celebrate our 25th Birthday in a fun way”.
The sport is now categorized as an International Sport and has a category in the Guinness Book of Records.
Entry fees - $25 per couple
Prize - Eligible winning team will have air fares to Sonkajärvi, Finland and 3 days accommodation to value of $5000 to compete against others on the world stage.
Rules – Competitors must adhere strictly to the rules. (Provided with official entry form)
Sponsorship packages are available.
