It’s a long way from the church but he’s here to rock’n’roll.

For the past 10 years Peter Hacquoil lived a quiet and sombre life as a pianist at the Alice Springs Baptist Church.

But then the husband and father was tempted by the bright lights of Adelaide and moved here to become a full-time busker with a bit of a difference.

The “difference” is a Baldwin piano he uses, fully decked out with its own set of wheels so he can, in typical busker fashion, move from prime spot to prime location as he pursues his craft and his vocation.

His favoured spots are the Rundle Street end of Rundle Mall from 5.30 to 7.30 most week nights and on Gouger Street, near Cane Corner from 8.30 to 10 on Friday nights. On a rainy day you can find him playing in a sheltered alleyway somewhere, even though the Baldwin has suffered serious rain damage from time to time.

He plays a bit of old pop and, true to his roots, some "Contemporary Christian" music, along with a dose of improvisation. “But my most requested numbers are Billy Joel’s Piano Man and Elton John’s Tiny Dancer,” says Peter.

Peter is planning on recording his own CD and frequents a new church in Hahndorf on the weekends. If you want to book him for any gigs you can contact Peter on 0458113258, at [email protected], or connect with him on Facebook. Just type Adelaide piano busker into Google and all the paths will lead to Peter Hacquoil.

Peter is one of the featured buskers in a photographic exhibition titled, Buskers of Adelaide Photography Exhibition which will open at Light Square House Level 1, 9 Light Square, Adelaide at 7.30pm on Wednesday, February 23 and will feature some of the buskers who have been photographed, performing on the night. Not Peter, however, as his piano can’t make it to the first level venue.

The exhibition, sponsored by Mad Australia Productions, will then be open from 9am to 3pm February 24 and 25, then the same hours from Wednesday through to Friday until March 11.
