With many multi-national organisations engaging in large, complex procurement exercises to increase service proficiency and decrease spend, small, agile businesses can take heart: bigger isn’t always better.

Deloitte, the largest professional services firm in the world with over 170,000 employees across 140 countries, recently chose entrepreneurial and boutique search firm pb Human Capital as a preferred supplier of recruitment and search services.

Deloitte’s growth plans are ambitious; five-fold growth over five years. “It’s a privilege to be chosen,” says Warwick Peel, 34, Director and co-founder of pb Human Capital, “and we believe it reflects Deloitte’s forward thinking, entrepreneurial and accountable ethos.”

pb Human Capital also has ambitious growth plans – but it’s a matter of scale. “We’ve more than doubled headcount in our first eighteen months,” Brendon Booth, 29, Director and co-founder of pbHC explains, with tongue firmly in cheek. “We’ve gone from two staff to five.”

“But seriously, despite the size difference, there are a number of synergies,” Booth continues. “Our specialty is management consulting, and we cover Strategy and Operations, Human Capital, and Technology Solutions.”

“They’re the three key divisions within Deloitte’s Consulting practice,” Peel explains, “and, as our values are closely aligned, I’m sure that motivated their decision to include us.”

Peel concludes that small service providers should not shy away from big tenders. “It proves that big companies will look to the merit – and not just the size – of an organisation when considering their tender response.”
