The stunning Jewel Cave will reopen on Saturday 18th December after a spectacular three million dollar redevelopment – and it’s just in time for the Christmas holiday season!

Jewel Cave is Western Australia’s largest tourism show cave and home to the world’s third longest straw stalactite – suspending an impressive 5.4 metres from the ceiling.

Over the last eighteen months the Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association (AMRTA) has been redeveloping the site to preserve this fragile attraction.

The meticulous project involved the removal of fifty-year old infrastructure above the cave to enable the natural filtration of water to protect threatened ecological species that live within the cave. A new tunnel entrance, carpark and board walk has also been constructed.

The Jewel Cave Preservation Centre features retail and cafe facilities complete with an interpretive area that will take visitors on an educational, visual and inspiring fifty-year journey.

AMRTA CEO Simon Ambrose reflected on this iconic achievement.

“Jewel Cave was officially opened by Premier Sir David Brand in 1960 and this is the most spectacular way possible that we could celebrate this fifty-year milestoneâ€.

“The new centre and the installation of eco-friendly interpretive lighting will enable repeat visitors to enjoy a completely new Jewel Cave experience†said Mr Ambrose.

AMRTA Attractions Manager Jayme Hatcher thanked the projects grant partners for helping the new Jewel Cave Preservation Centre become a reality.

“The project would not have been possible without the support of Lotterywest, Royalties for Regions, Regional Infrastructure Funding Program, TQUAL, South West Development Commission and Envirofund,†said Ms Hatcher.

Jewel Cave is located ten kilometres north of Augusta just off Caves road which meanders its way from Cape Leeuwin to Cape Naturaliste.

Jewel Cave captures the illustrious beauty that the Margaret River region has become so world-renowned for. The stalactites and straws stretch, suspend and hang across the ceiling like vines and dancing cobwebs making it easy to admire why Jewel Cave is one of the most spectacular attractions in Australia’s South West region.

Tours of Jewel Cave run every half an hour from 9.30am to 4.00pm during the Christmas Holiday period. Jewel Cave will not be open on Christmas Day.

Let your imagination run wild this festive season and descend into a world like no other at the Jewel Cave Preservation Centre. For more information on caves in Margaret River visit the Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association website or contact CaveWorks on (08) 9757 7411.
