Tasmanian electrical contractors PSG Russell Smith won the top national award for their work on the Medical Sciences Building at the annual electrical industry Excellence Awards hosted by peak electrical industry body the National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA).

PSG Russell Smith won the contract for works in the new iconic Medical Sciences 1 building, which is home to the University School of Medicine and Menzies Research Institute heart of Hobart's Medical Science Precinct.

The leading Tasmanian firm won the national award in front over 500 industry representatives including electrical contractors, educators and government representatives at the annual gala event for the electrical and communications industry at Star City in Sydney.

NECA’s Chief executive officer, Mr James Tinslay, said the team at PSG Russell Smith were awarded the top prize because they had to solve complex design problems while integrating several systems in the one multifaceted project.

“This project was just phenomenal. It required the integration of many systems and the final result is a credit to the team at PSG Russell Smith,” Mr Tinslay said.

“The scope included low voltage services, standby generator, UPS, voice and data, security, CCTV, fire detection, emergency warning systems, and access control and audio visual cabling.

“This was a very complex installation process due to the visual impact constraints of the building and need for innovative wiring methods. There was major variations mid-project for the installation of a substation that necessitated extensive re-planning but the team at PSG Russell Smith produced a simply outstanding result.”

The construction and engineering achievements of the Medical Sciences 1 building is an example of how Tasmanian firms are leading the nation on big construction projects.

“As the electrotechnology industry continues to grow and tackle new technological challenges, it is encouraging to see electrical and communication contractors in Tasmania such as PSG Russell Smith playing such an important role in leading their Australian colleagues.”
