At the recent Global Eco Tourism Conference held in Noosa announcements relating to GPS guided tourism were made. The conference included attendees such as famous Ecowarrior David Bellamy and Ishwaran Natarajan of UNESCO MaB program.

The Indigenous day included a feature based on GPS Eco Tourism’s GPS Guided Tour concept.

The first walk has now been released on Carlo Sandblow situated on Rainbow Beach, gateway to World heritage listed Fraser Island, in the Great Sandy Biosphere. A treasure trove for Eco Tourists looking for a range of nature based walks. There are few better places on our Earth to see nature at its best.

The area features some unique opportunities. For example an unusual animal only found in the Cooloola region is the Cooloola Monster – Cooloola propator, a primitive, cricket-like insect of the order Orthoptera, discovered in Cooloola National Park, Queensland circa 1980. The genus was considered distinct enough to be placed in its own family, the Cooloolidae. It lives almost entirely underground and is believed to feed on other soil-dwelling invertebrates.

Inskip Point (not far from the Carlo Sandblow) is one of the easiest places to see the endangered Black Breasted Button Quail. The heath at Cooloola National Park (just up the road) is a very reliable place to see the Ground Parrot and the Southern Emu Wren (both listed as vulnerable in Queensland).

Nature based tourism is an important growing market and with it comes the need to care for the natural environment. This is achieved by alerting users on how to interact with fauna and protect the flora, providing information on how to manage snakebite and the importance of hollow logs are some examples.

The Carlo Sandblow walk (without GPS Coordinates) is available as a download from Apple’s App Store for only $US2.65. This is an introductory offer so that a global audience can access and appreciate the type of nature based tour available in Queensland Australia. All you need is an iPhone and a Wi-Fi connection and there it is. No matter where you are on this Earth of ours, you can download this tour and visit at your leisure. Then come and experience the real thing.

The GPS coordinated walk is also available from Rainbow Ocean Palms Beach Resort right next door to the Carlo Sandblow car park for those without an iPhone. But if you have an iPhone, no matter where you are in the world you can download the Carlo Sandblow walk and you will be able to use the non GPS walk on the Carlo Sandblow.

The GPS Guided tour of the Carlo Sandblow makes use of communication technologies to provide, via SMS, messages of importance. For example, if a storm is approaching or if a whale is breaching off shore the user can be alerted. By being given limited access to telephone they can also call for assistance if an unplanned event occurs. The information transmitted can include precise location from GPS Co-ordinates.

This is because we are using global technologies that provide low cost visit opportunities. Don’t worry if you are not an iPhone user we have units available from Rainbow Ocean Palms Resort.

In the future we will also be using Android technology that will enable an expanded range of new platforms.

The Carlo Sandblow walk will integrate with other tours including world famous Noosa National Park and Noosa’s Hastings St. We are currently creating a walk/drive tour of the Gubbi Gubbi traditional lands featuring culture and heritage. This project will express their history in a unique way giving visitors a unique opportunity to experience the real and authentic Gubbi Gubbi people. These then feature places such as Pomona, home of the Noosa Museum.

This new way of delivering guided tours is informative and entertaining. Most of all you will appreciate what our environment is about and come back for more, after all UNESCO has agreed by providing Great Sandy with biosphere reserve status.
