Australian journalists are taking advantage of the extensive network of sources available using free online service SourceBottle.

The free service, which has been running for over a year, is conveniently sourcing quality case studies and expert commentary for journalists, with little effort required on their part.

“Typically, call outs for sources are emailed to subscribers and made public on the SourceBottle site before being circulated via social media sites like Twitter and Facebook – a highly effective crowdsourcing model that continues to yield impressive results for journalists,” said founder Rebecca Derrington.

“But SourceBottle also caters for journalists who do not want their call out shared via social media sites or who wish to remain anonymous or to avoid having their publication or media outlet named.”

Since its launch 16 months ago, SourceBottle has broadcast over 3,300 calls outs for sources from journalists and writers on behalf of a diverse range of media, including: Channel 10; Channel 9; Channel 7, The ABC, SBS; The Sydney Morning Herald; The Age; The Herald Sun; The Australian; The Sun Herald; The Weekend Australian; Money magazine; The Australian Financial Review; Australian Creative magazine; Dynamic Export; SmartCompany; Cosmopolitan magazine; CLEO magazine; Madison magazine; Grazia Magazine; Sunday Telegraph; Rolling Stone Magazine; Dynamic Business magazine; The New York Times; Readers Digest; Desktop Magazine and Nett Magazine.

Ms Derrington said she was thrilled with the media’s uptake of the service and that the quality of the call outs being posted.

"Because the quality of the call outs has been so good, the quality of the subscribers is also very high.

“Some journalists have told me they’re genuinely surprised by the calibre of the sources they’ve accessed through the site.

“And they love the fact that their personal details (including their email address) is always kept private and not displayed on the site or made available to people responding to the call outs.

"There's no downside to using the service, and I recommend journalists use it to complement their more traditional approaches to finding quality sources for their stories." Ms Derrington said.
