The South Australian government has appointed SABRENet Ltd to extend its ultra-fast optical broadband network to Australia’s premier naval industry precinct, Techport Australia.
To be completed in mid 2009, the new extension will connect to the Maritime Skills Centre in the first instance, the first building completed within the Techport Australia precinct.
Opening the Centre, Premier Mike Rann said, “I am pleased that SABRENet, the State’s high speed fibre optic broadband network, will be coming to Techport Australia, linking the Maritime Skills Centre to all of the State’s other education and R&D centres."
Once connected to the precinct, SABRENet will also support advanced industrial research and training at facilities such as the AWD Systems Centre and Raytheon Australia’s new South Australian Engineering Centre.
SABRENet Ltd Chair Paul Sherlock welcomed this recent announcement as further evidence of the company’s successful strategy to link research education institutions across traditional sectoral boundaries.
“SABRENet has grown rapidly from being a largely university-focussed project to connecting large schools, TAFE colleges, government laboratories and, now, a major industrial precinct,” Mr Sherlock said.
“SABRENet’s reputation as a dependable, scalable and very cost-effective infrastructure platform, underpinning vital research and education initiatives in South Australia for many years to come, will be further enhanced with the connection of Techport Australia.”
SABRENet Ltd has engaged telecommunications carrier Amcom (ASX:AMM) Ltd to build the new extension, which will extend some 14 kilometres from the existing SABRENet network at Woodville to the Techport Australia site at Osborne.
SABRENet Ltd will also extend its long-term infrastructure sharing agreement with Amcom, which will see Amcom offering high speed services to commercial customers at the Techport Australia precinct. Funding for the $1.4 million project has been provided by the South Australian Government through Defence SA.
