Charities reap rewards of $100m in technology savings
Technology donations to charities and nonprofits in Australia through the DonorTec program have just passed the $100m milestone.
Operated by Australian nonprofit Connecting Up Australia (CUA), in partnership with US nonprofit TechSoup Global, the DonorTec program channels donated and heavily discounted software, hardware, security systems and communication systems from major companies (including Microsoft, Cisco and Symantec) to Australia’s charities.
During the past three years, more than 11,000 charities and nonprofit organisations across Australia and New Zealand have benefited from over $103m worth of technology obtained via the DonorTec service.
In CUA’s recently released "The Listening Report – What Do Australia’s Nonprofits Really Want?" (a social research project designed to explore the capacity development priorities of the nonprofit sector in Australia), technology issues were identified as a daily challenge the sector faces. That’s because it impacts on all aspects of a nonprofit’s work, from communications to fundraising to service provision and reporting.
CUA CEO Doug Jacquier believes that technology is a powerful enabler for social change. “CUA’s partnership with TechSoup Global to deliver the DonorTec program is a powerful vehicle for charities and nonprofits to have the same computing power and internet access as similar sized business organisations. It also allows these helping organisations to invest the savings made into direct service delivery.”
He quotes the example of The Fred Hollows Foundation, which estimated that the savings made through the DonorTec program led to sight being restored to over 400 people who would not have been reached otherwise.
