Tuesday, October 19th, 2010 - National Electrical and Communications Association - NECA
Today the peak electrical industry body, the National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA), again called on the government to publicly release the details of safety inspections on homes that received both foil and non-foil insulation under the failed Home Insulation Program.

In response to a media statement from the Hon Greg Combet, Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency and the Hon Mark Dreyfus, Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, NECA’s chief executive officer, Mr James Tinslay, said it is frustrating the Australian government has again today chosen not to inform consumers and the electrical industry of the real scale of problems associated with problematic installations.

“The electrical industry is frustrated that the government has again today chosen not to let us know how many of the 95,000 home inspections found insulation installations to be of concern,” Mr Tinslay said.

“The Auditor-General’s report into the Home Insulation Program found that 29% of 13,808 home inspections as at March this year had dangerous or faulty insulation. This figure is absolutely and dangerously high, and until we know whether this dangerous trend continued throughout the entire 95,000 home inspections, the real size of the problem is unknown and this is a major concern.”

NECA was the first organisation to warn the government of potential dangers associated with the insulation program.

“Until the true inspection figures are released, people living in one of the 1.1 million Australian homes that received insulation that have not already had a safety inspection can not have peace of mind.

“Until the government releases the figures so we all know the true scale of the problem, I encourage anyone with concerns to arrange an inspection by calling the government hotline on 13 17 92,” Mr Tinslay said.
