Whilst Gift and Homewares Australia (GHA) welcomes the appointment of Nick Sherry as Minister for Small Business, CEO Alby Taylor expressed disappointment at Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s decision to leave the portfolio out of Cabinet.

“Nick Sherry has some excellent skills and knowledge in relevant fields, such as superannuation, tax and finance, but a position in Cabinet would provide the additional resources and opportunities necessary for him to achieve more for small business owners,” he said.

“The small business sector plays a vital economic role that requires participation across all levels of debate.

“Without a position in Cabinet I believe the Minister for Small Business will struggle to effectively represent the needs of the industry.”

GHA identifies closely with the small business sector, representing a significant percentage of small business owners through its membership program.

Taylor said he had concerns about Gillard’s decision, and believed it would have a negative effect on the growth and future of small business in Australia.

“There are a number of challenges facing small businesses that require urgent attention from the Government, not least the current quagmire of legislation,” he said.

“Red tape is still a huge problem for many in the sector with expensive legal hurdles and a lack of administrative understanding providing barriers to growth and stilting innovation.”

Taylor said a move to reduce the complex compliance requirements, coupled with an increased focus on innovation and investment from the Government would be welcomed by many in the business community.

“The Minister’s success in this position is going to come down to his ability to listen and react to the needs of those in the industry,” said Taylor.
