Recently, Waterfind prepared a consolidated 2016/17 Water Outlook for the Southern Connected System incorporating the most recent allocation announcements as well as detailed market data from national and regional resources.
The report highlights an increased interest from irrigators in forward markets and carryover water opportunities, as the end of the 2015/16 water season approaches. Waterfind have seen irrigators switch their focus from this year’s consumptive use and begin planning for next season’s water requirements.
Water allocation outlooks published by the South Australian, New South Wales and Victorian governments all predict lower allocations for the start of the 2016/17 irrigation year than were experienced in this current season. These reduced outlooks have stimulated especially high demand for carryover and forward water. In the Waterfind Forward Market for the Southern Connected Basin, irrigators have already secured water for 2016/17 at $200-285 per megalitre (the lower prices in the range apply for Murrumbidgee water).
As a consequence of the current dry outlook, the Southern Connected ‘spot’ or temporary market has also firmed from $220 to $240-250 per megalitre as irrigators have begun to secure water for carryover purposes.
Additionally, interstate trade to and from NSW will close on 30 April, with all other markets to close on or before June 30. As these end of year market closures occur supply limitations will arise, which may further impact on the price of end of season temporary allocation.
