Victorian Government leading the way in innovation

15th April, 2016, Melbourne, Victoria.

Melbourne-based non-profit, Code for Australia, is teaming up with the Andrews Government to launch an exciting new project that could revolutionise the way government operates. It's known as "Code for Victoria".

Code for Victoria will bring some of the country’s most innovative technologists together with the Victorian State Government to help solve some of their most pressing challenges.

Code for Victoria Fellows will be embedded within the Department of Premier and Cabinet for six months. They will work closely with the public sector to identify, assess and provide solutions for challenges.

“This is an Australian first," said Code for Australia director Dan Groch.

“One of our guiding principles is transparency. We work in public, said Mr Groch. Code for Australia Fellows will produce ‘open source’ software. What this means is that any member of the public can view it, edit or contribute to it.”

The Andrews Government understands that twenty-first century  solutions are required for twenty-first century problems.

“We're working hard to further develop the capability of Victoria's public sector workforce said Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings”.

“According to the Minister, this initiative will bring together our public service and experts from the tech industry to collaborate on solutions to some of government’s most complex problems”

This Code for Victoria initiative is part of a broader push towards building the capabilities in the public sector so that they’re equipped to deal with the problems that constantly arise in a world of rapid technological change.

Working in the tech space, Code for Victoria understands the importance of transparency when working with government. Their commitment to working in the open is based on their belief that both government and the people benefit from gaining a greater insight into how government operates and how taxes are being spent.

This new project also seeks to tackle gender imbalance within the tech industry. For the Andrews Government, this is part of the broader commitment to end all forms of discrimination within society. And this is an important opportunity to promote diversity within an industry that has, historically, struggled in this regard.

Code for Victoria shares this vision and encourages broad participation. It sees breaking down the gender gap in the start-up industry as one of its primary long-term objectives.
