It IS possible to buy more for less, and help the environment along the way says Jeannie Richardson of award winning non-packaged grocery store, Wasteless Pantry.
“Our philosophy is about less waste which gives people an incentive to buy exactly as much as they need, while it is fresh, which helps everyone’s budget,” said Jeannie Richardson co-owner of Wasteless Pantry in Mundaring.
“We have had shoppers come in for quantities as small as one teaspoon so they could try an ingredient in a certain recipe. That’s fine – because there’s no waste! said Ms Richardson
“Customers bring their own containers to the store. Alternatively there are recycled donated jars, paper bags and produce bags available,
“Package free shopping is suitable for everyone. Our store provides for everyday needs but just in a different forum,
“Within the first four months of opening and with the support of our community we had saved around 6,373 plastic shopping bags and 8,681 smaller plastic produce bags from being used and discarded,” Ms Richardson said.
“There appears to be a ground swell of people becoming more aware of plastics, decreasing landfill sites and litter in our oceans,
“With reusables you still have some impacts in manufacture, transport, storage and initial sale, but then you get to fill and enjoy almost endlessly. If your reusable does break the majority of it is fully recyclable – over and over again,
“Transitioning to a wasteless pantry or lifestyle is an investment in the future. Every time you choose reusables it’s a win for the environment but also for your pocket!” she said.
Wasteless Pantry was awarded the Best New Business and Overall Business of the Year at the Mundaring Chamber of Commerce 2015 Business Excellence Awards.
Wasteless Pantry opened 1 June 2015 at Mundaring Village Shopping Centre. They are the only virtually package free store in Perth. The only packaged food products they sell are bread mixes and flour bags of at least 10kg.
