In the current Jubilee Year of Mercy, instituted by Pope Francis, it was fitting for His Holiness to be gifted with a book called The Life of Repentance and Purity. The book was written by the late Pope Shenouda III, the Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St Mark. It has been translated from Arabic to English by Bishop Dr Suriel, Chancellor and Dean of St Athanasius College and Coptic Orthodox Bishop of Melbourne, with new references included by an editorial board.
Pope Francis received the Life of Repentance and Purity title from Bishop David, the Coptic Bishop of New York on April 6 while he was on a personal trip to Rome with Cardinal Timothy Dolan, also from New York. Bishop David presented the book, launched in the United States on March 12, as a collaboration between St Athanasius College (SAC) Press Melbourne and St Vladimir’s Seminary (SVS) Press New York.
The English translation, with supporting commentary, is the first book to be released in the new Coptic Studies Series joint publishing venture by SVS Press (New York) and SAC Press (Melbourne). It has become the fastest selling SVS Press title in history, with 5000 copies sold out in the first few weeks of release and a re-print already under way. The Australian book launch is scheduled for July 5 when the Dean of St Vladimir’s Seminary, the Very Rev Dr John Behr, will visit Melbourne to present at the ANZATS Conference and at the University of Divinity’s Patristics Study Intensive.
Bishop Dr Suriel said he was overwhelmed with the popularity of The Life of Repentance and Purity book and was honoured to respond to a dedicated audience, ready to access quality spiritual writings in English by respected Orthodox church leaders and writers such as Pope Shenouda III. “Pope Shenouda III invites all to grow in God’s love and mercy through a simple, practical and beautiful path of spiritual growth,” Bishop Dr Suriel said.
“This book is for people at any stage of the Christian journey, seeking to grow more in love. Through the process of repentance we carve out a place for God to dwell more fully within our hearts and minds.”
