After six long years in the making and thousands of kilometres travelled, the Murray River is being showcased like never before with the release of the spectacular coffee table book Australia’s Great River Landscape: Murray River Mallee.

The 172-page book of landscapes by award-winning Australian photographer Shane Strudwick gives readers an insight into the quirky and often unknown stories and images from the Mallee and Murray.

This labour of love began in 2004 when Shane set out to photograph the landscapes and communities along the entire length of the Murray. Keen to share these images with the world, he put together a book of photographs and stories that show the immense diversity and beauty of the region.

“The river system that once connected communities has been divided over time, so I set out to pull the region together collecting unique Australian stories and capturing breathtaking photographs of the Murray along the way,” Shane says.

“As the Murray River has recently been through a devastating drought, this book shows that there are a lot of positive aspects to the mighty river than most of us experience.

“I’d love the book to challenge our perceptions of the river visually, and reveal interesting stories of the region so future visitors can appreciate its true beauty and the importance of the river as a part Australia’s identity.”

Shane says the book takes readers on an educational journey along the Murray from the time traditional landowners protected and managed the river, to paddle steamers, explorers and bushrangers, the locks and weirs, architecture, the flood of ’56, abundant wildlife, outback river and much more.

“I have created a book that not only looks beautiful on the coffee table but also contains a concise history of the Murray that can be used as a source of information for people both young and old.”

Shane has worked for many years to promote the beauty and uniqueness of the Murray River and Mallee regions across New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia and enjoys sharing his passion with the world.
