The founding director of Adelaide allied health services company Wellness & Lifestyles Australia, Nick Heywood-Smith, was last night awarded the Ernst & Young 2010 Central Region Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Mr Heywood-Smith will now go on to compete in the national awards, with the winners to be announced 24th November.

Mr Heywood-Smith established Wellness & Lifestyles (W&L) in 2003 and has built a strong business providing allied health services in response to the ever changing needs of the aged care sector both in aged care facilities and in private homes.

Wellness & Lifestyles has grown from a home office to a company with over 100 therapists and 12 full-time office staff with the full scope of allied health services including physiotherapy, podiatry, speech pathology, occupational therapy and more. The company provides services to over 220 facilities and over 8,500 aged care beds with current clients including aged care facilities, disability services, community health services, day therapy centres, home care package providers, public and regional hospitals and private clients in their homes.

As Mr Heywood-Smith explains, “We provide a 'one stop shop' for allied health services for our clients and focus on providing a work-life balance for our therapists”

The core business of W&L is aged-focussed allied health services, but the company has recently developed to provide educational resources for aged care facilities, aged care workers and allied health professionals.

“It has been an exciting couple of years for W&L,” Mr Heywood-Smith says. “In 2009 we were named as one of BRW’s Top 100 fast companies and received recognition at Telstra Business Awards in both 2008 and 2009. We have also recently launched an exciting new aspect of our business via the W&L Education website which provides educational resources and training to those involved in all aspects of allied health and the aged care industry”.

The combination of a dynamic business model and commitment to the provision of essential services to the aged population earned Mr Heywood-Smith this accolade.
