86 MW facility serves thriving Western Australia

KARRATHA, WESTERN AUSTRALIA--(Marketwire) - ATCO Power today celebrated the official opening of its environmentally friendly Karratha power generating station in Western Australia. Constructed, owned and operated by ATCO, the 86 MW facility is the most efficient gas-fired generating station in the region.

"The Karratha generating station demonstrates ATCO's commitment to the environment," said Rick Brouwer, President, ATCO Power. "This highly efficient plant uses 35 per cent less natural gas to produce each kilowatt of electricity compared to existing generation in the region. The end result is lower greenhouse gas emissions."

To mark the opening, Mr. Brouwer and ATCO Group President and Chief Executive Officer, Nancy Southern, joined with Western Australia Minister of Energy, Honourable Peter Collier and Horizon Energy Managing Director, Rod Hayes, in the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. Local community members also gathered for the ceremony, which was followed by a tour of the power plant. The generating station will supply electricity to the region under a 20-year contract with state-owned Horizon Power.

"The Pilbara is undergoing massive change and growth and energy security is an essential element of meeting the communities' vision," said Rod Hayes, Managing Director, Horizon Power.

Located in the resource rich northwest quadrant of Western Australia, the Karratha power station was constructed utilizing world-class technology and the experience of ATCO Power. It was built on time, on budget and without a single lost time safety incident.

"In spite of global economic instability, this part of Australia continues to thrive," said Mr. Brouwer. "I am pleased we are able to serve this growing region with clean, environmentally friendly power."

Karratha is ATCO's third generating station in Australia. At the 180 MW Osborne generating station in Adelaide, ATCO upgraded the technology and water recycling capability of the facility to be more efficient and conserve water. At the Bulwer Island cogeneration plant, part of the Queensland Clean Fuels Project, ATCO produces 33 MW of electricity while using recycled water for the demineralization facility.
