Australian shoppers research and purchase Christmas gifts online to shop smarter and discover unique gift ideas.

Australian shoppers will research Christmas gifts online and then return to purchase them 4.2 days later, with 67% browsing on a mobile device, according to new research by She Shopped, a leading website about shopping great brands online. 77% will purchase a physical gift over a gift card, with the average online order totalling $119. The findings demonstrate how savvy consumers are using online channels to shop smarter and with less stress this Christmas.

“Our research shows how shopping behaviour is changing online. Shoppers rely on traditional search engines such as Google but are also heavily influenced by social networks, which are increasingly playing a role in driving purchasing decisions,” said Lucy Cornes, founder of She Shopped.

Cornes notes the power of social media networks driving ecommerce.

“Social commerce is powerful. Brands who understand the importance of engaging with their audience in an authentic way on social and online media, will drive more product sales this Christmas. The influence is compounded when shoppers can see feedback from other consumers on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Purchase recommendations from other social media users can be extremely powerful.”

Shoppers are also using online media to find unique gifts. “The top 5 most browsed items on She Shopped in the past 7 days, reflect items that are a bit left-of-centre” said Cornes.
