The BTI 7800 Series Open Architecture Integrates Cloud Virtualization With Packet-Optical Scale in CO-Ready Platform for Next-Gen Edge Service Delivery; Announces Third-Party Virtual Network Functions Ecosystem With Active Broadband Networks' Virtual Broadband Network Gateway

DUSSELDORF, GERMANY--(Marketwired - Oct 13, 2015) - LAYER123 SDN & OPENFLOW WORLD CONGRESS - Responding to increasing demands faced by service providers to deliver high-capacity services more dynamically to subscribers, BTI Systems today announced the BTI 7800 Virtual Network Edge. A new class of solution that capitalizes on a truly open architecture, integrating cloud/Web 2.0 technologies with a converged packet-optical platform, the BTI 7800 Virtual Network Edge enables next-generation broadband services delivery at the network edge.

BTI is a market-leading provider of cloud and metro networking software and systems to colocation, content and service providers around the world. The company's new solution leverages the high-density and massively scalable SDN-enabled BTI 7800 Series metro packet-optical platform that maximizes network efficiencies, simplifies operations and significantly lowers costs.

At the Layer123 SDN & OpenFlow World Congress, BTI will showcase the Virtual Network Edge solution -- in Booth #14 -- by demonstrating a Proof-of-Concept with Active Broadband Networks' Virtual Broadband Network Gateway (vBNG). The companies will feature the hosting of Active Broadband Networks' Software-Defined Virtual Network Gateway (SDN-vNG) software on the BTI 7800 Series Applications Blade to aggregate broadband access traffic at the network edge. Additionally, the demonstration will show the Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) capabilities integrated in the BTI 7800 Series platform, being controlled and managed from an OpenDaylight SDN controller.

BTI also recently announced that at the Layer123 SDN & OpenFlow World Congress, the company will be demonstrating a Proof-of-Concept as part of the SDN Showcase in the Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks (CENGN) Booth, #83, located in the Travetin Foyer. Specifically, BTI will be highlighting bandwidth-on-demand for multi-site, multi-domain, data center capacity management using SDN. Also at the event, on Thursday, October 15 at 2:45 p.m. CEST, BTI's Director of Product Architecture Peter Landon will present the session, "Bringing the Data Center into the Central Office."

The demand by both businesses and consumers for high-bandwidth access, rapid service turn-up, on-demand connectivity and nonstop performance is being fueled by applications including video on-demand, Internet TV, mobility, cloud services and the emerging Internet of Things.

"Service providers are transforming their rigid, proprietary and fixed-function networks to open, virtualized and web-scalable infrastructures that enable much faster response to the historic pace of change in today's competitive environments," said BTI Systems Chief Technology Officer Robert Keys. "This transformation to a new architecture is happening at the network edge, and requires the use of virtualized network functionality to aggregate subscriber access traffic, including DSL, PON and Ethernet services, in a more efficient, on-demand and cost-effective manner. Our BTI 7800 Virtual Network Edge solution provides a unique architectural approach by integrating virtualization software in an open and converged network infrastructure platform that has been purpose-built for the metro cloud -- delivering services closer to the customer to improve service delivery, performance, quality of service and economics."

"Active Broadband Networks is helping to drive the transition to software and server economics for service providers," said Active Broadband Networks President and Chief Executive Officer Adam Dunstan. "We welcome the opportunity to work with BTI Systems to demonstrate this critical application leveraging our vBNG technology to simply and efficiently aggregate multi-service access traffic for service providers at the network edge. The seamless hosting of our SDN-vNG with the BTI 7800 platform is another compelling proof point that the open approach to networking technologies service providers are demanding is quickly becoming a realization."

An Open, Software-Driven Platform Delivering Scale, Convergence and Virtualization

The BTI 7800 Virtual Network Edge solution integrates rich optical transport and wire-speed routing with applications software in an open system that supports rapid development and ease of use. Integrating the innovation and performance curve of third-party commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) compute blades and an open carrier-grade Linux OS, the BTI 7800 Virtual Network Edge solution uniquely features:

  • A high-performance packet-optical transport platform integrated with an NFV applications plane, and sharing a common nonblocking switch fabric, power, cooling and management for efficiencies and cost savings;
  • Scalable performance and economics by leveraging best-of-breed merchant silicon and horizontally scalable COTS compute in a multi-slot chassis design;
  • Increased service velocity and innovation with open management interfaces (NETCONF/YANG, RESTful APIs and OpenFlow), an open NFV plane (COTS compute, X.86 processor, carrier-grade Linux OS) and open standard SDN control (OpenDaylight today);
  • Flexible hosting of BTI or third-party Virtual Network Functions for services innovation and differentiation;
  • Central Office-ready architecture with full redundancy, NEBS3, DC (and AC) power and minimal cabling;
  • Fast service deployment backed by an agile, responsive and experienced professional services organization.

"BTI has created a unique architectural approach to virtualizing network functions by supporting standard COTS compute in a chassis-based solution, versus stacking 1RU servers," said Current Analysis Principal Analyst Rick Talbot. "Service providers can reap the cost-effectiveness, performance and innovation of a vendor-agnostic disaggregated hardware solution without sacrificing the switching capacity, density and economic benefits provided by the low-cost network element interconnection and shared power and cooling of an integrated chassis approach."

The BTI 7800 Virtual Network Edge represents the third phase of the BTI 7800 Series platform rollout. The first phase delivered 10G/100G bandwidth and scale for metro Data Center Interconnect (DCI) and metro 10G/100G wavelength applications for content, colocation and service providers. The second phase demonstrated operational efficiencies and simplification with the integration of IP/MPLS to deliver converged DCI and Cloud Exchange services. With this announcement, the third phase commences with virtualized network edge services using third-party virtualization software to enable services innovation and velocity for providers.
