FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Date: July 27, 2015
As of 21 July 2015, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection has updated the current 6 month work restriction on a Working Holiday Maker visa (subclasses 417 and 462) to allow Au Pairs to remain with the same family for the entirety of their 12 month visa. This ruling recognises Au Pairs as a legitimate childcare solution and echoes Au Pair visa arrangements in New Zealand and the U.S.A.
AIFS' Managing Director Wendi Aylward and president of the industry association, CAPAA has long called for changes to the Working holiday visa: “Au Pairs are the preferred childcare solution for an increasing number of families who no longer work within the hours of a traditional working week. Since the announcement we have received a large number of calls from families and I expect this will continue."
Ms Aylward recently met with the Minister for Social Services, Scott Morrison to discuss the Au Pair visa. “We were very pleased by Minister’s Morrison’s support and I look forward to an ongoing dialogue. The next step for the industry is a dedicated Au pair visa and the introduction of a regulatory framework covering recruitment, compensation and support of Au Pairs.”
In the meantime Ms Aylward advises families seeking an Au Pair to opt for the services of a quality agencies like AIFS “A quality agency will screen Au Pairs, facilitate the placement and then support families during the placement."
