The Federal Government’s new Digital Transformation Office (DTO) was officially up and running last week—and not a moment too soon. Over 1 in 8 Australians (14+) now look up Government information and services online in an average four weeks, the latest online tracking data from Roy Morgan shows.
The DTO aims to improve the Government’s digital services, making websites easier to find, more user-friendly and consistent across departments.
In the year to March 2015, an estimated 2.5 million Australians 14+ (13.1%) reported using the internet to access Government information and services in the last four weeks—an increase of around 40% from 1.8 million (9.7%) in 2011. The largest year-on-year increase came after the launch of the myGov online portal for services including tax lodgement, Centrelink, Medicare and the NDIS.

Small business owners are among the most likely to have accessed Government information or assistance via the internet in the last four weeks, followed by job-seekers, parents and workers.
21.6% of Small Business Owners research Government information and services online, as do 17.5% of Australians who are looking for work, 16.1% of parents of children under 18 in the home and 14.4% of people who are employed. Students are slightly less likely than average (12.2%) and only 8.9% of retirees go online for Government info.
Of course, these groups are not mutually exclusive—but these results do suggest which Government websites and digital services are most in-demand, by which of its citizens.

“If we can look up next week’s weather in Bali, see how many rupiahs our dollar buys, check our bank balance, apply for a credit card, read hotel reviews and book a flight with only a few clicks, it should really only take only a couple more to find out the latest duty-free allowances.”
