In response to calls from the Independent Member for Sydney, Alex Greenwich, the NSW Attorney-General, Gabrielle Upton, has committed to reviewing the implications for NSW of the Human Rights Commission report on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Intersex rights.

Mr Greenwich said:

“I welcome the Attorney General’s commitment to improve the lives of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities”

In question time yesterday the Attorney General said:

“The Human Rights Commission released its report on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Intersex, which made it clear that people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex face significant challenges not only in New South Wales but also in Australia and across the world... The Government will closely review this report, and I as Attorney General will work to ensure that all members of our community, especially the ones that the member for Sydney has identified, will have justice that is fair and equal”

Mr Greenwich said his priorities were strengthening anti-discrimination laws, and trans* and intersex law reform to remove forced surgical interventions:

“The trans* and intersex communities are unfairly treated by outdated laws that cause harm and increase stigma.”

“I will soon introduce my anti-discrimination bill to remove exemptions that allows private schools to discriminate against LGBTI teachers and students

This comes as the NSW Legislative Assembly unanimously passed Mr Greenwich's motion encouraging a free vote on marriage equality at the federal level.
