Thirty five future leaders from rural communities in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia recently returned from a unique seven day leadership forum in the Australian Capital Territory.

The leaders were participating in the Rabobank Young Rural Leaders Summit, held at Outward Bound’s National Base, just south of Canberra. The delegates were chosen by their local Country Education Foundation in an effort to continue to provide extra education opportunities for people in rural Australia.

This was not a typical leadership summit – the delegates were put in a series of challenging situations to test their leadership and teamwork skills, while helping them to develop resilience and self confidence.

The activities included hiking expeditions, abseiling, caving and camping under minimal protection of a bivvy. Students also have to develop and implement a project designed to enrich the community.

Outward Bound CEO Darren Black says initiatives like the Rabobank Young Rural Leaders Summit are important to ensure future leaders from regional Australia are not overlooked.

“We are proud to play a role in helping to shape the future leaders of Australia. It’s extremely important young people from rural Australia are provided with equal opportunities as those from urban areas.”

“We deliver outdoor learning adventures to thousands of students every year, with a special emphasis on providing places for individuals and groups from remote communities and disadvantaged backgrounds through scholarships with a value in excess of $500,000 each year,” Mr Black said.

Participant Brett Foran from Yass, NSW wants to develop a program to help students in wheelchairs to join in more activities. His goal is to construct more wheelchair accessible public facilities in parks. He believes youths are often overlooked in rural areas.

“I like the community and culture of living in a rural area, but the drought and lack of entertainment and facilities make it challenging,” he said.
