Bill Withers, the founder of acQuire Technology Solutions, is a finalist in Austmine’s Champion of Innovation Award. Recognised for developing the concept of GIM (Geoscientific Information Management), Bill’s goal to create a strategic way to manage drill hole data has become a critical business application for the global exploration and mining industry. The Austmine Awards will be announced on 19 May 2015 at the Royal International Convention Centre in Brisbane.
PERTH, Western Australia (06 May 2015) – Bill Withers knew the mining industry had a problem when it came to geoscientific information management and it was costing miners both time and money. While all miners rely on drill hole data to run their exploration and mining operations, miners were reliant on in-house or very primitive software to manage the data.
Without any standardised way to store geoscientific information, every mine adopted a different way of managing this business-critical data. It was not unusual for massive amounts of data to be stored in multiple Excel spreadsheets. Bill’s innovative approach to developing an overall GIM (Geoscientific Information Management) strategy has saved the mining industry countless hours and ensured higher quality and more strategic decision-making.
In recognition of his work in creating the concept of GIM and leading a team of engineers who pioneered GIM software, Bill has been shortlisted for Austmine’s Champion of Innovation Award.
Warren Cook, Managing Director of acQuire in Africa and Europe, explains why Bill’s contribution is remarkable.
“Bill has been integral in elevating the profile and importance of managing a resource company’s drilling data.
“He’s influenced all size of company from junior explorers to the majors, to re-think the way that they manage their resource asset.”
Bill facilitated industry forums to guide his work. Using the Outcome Driven Innovation methodology, he and his small team interviewed 100 geoscientists from around the world to ensure the resulting GIM products suited the needs of the wider industry.
The Austmine Awards will take place at the Royal International Convention Centre in Brisbane on 19 May 2015.
