Yoga teachers and entrepreneurs Russell Chan and Deanne Kong bring a new concept to Adelaide's Yoga scene with Mat 2 Plate, a unique yoga event combined with a gourmet dining experience that they believe will not only promote a healthy body and spirit but also bring with it a lot of fun.

Adelaide—12th and 14th May 2015.  Mat 2 Plate is the brainchild of Russell Chan and Deanne Kong, food enthusiasts and yoga teachers. The idea is to not only promote a healthy body and mind through the practice of yoga, but also to sustain that body with healthy, great-tasting food and social activities that nourish the spirit.

Russell Chan, director of Unlock Your Body yoga, tells us that he first explored the idea with Deanne as they left a yoga class in search of good food and conversation that wouldn't detract from the healthy experience they just received. “The practice of yoga takes a serious and disciplined mind, and it's hard sometimes for instructors to shift gears and socialise with the students even though we really want to,” he says. “For those that do choose togo somewhere after class in a group how do you continue the healthy experience of yoga when you're surrounded by coffee shops and burger joints? It just feels counter-intuitive.”

The goal of Mat 2 Plate was to find a way to continue the healthy, mind-body experience of yoga, while also being social and enjoying the moment. “We want people to not only have a good time at a Mat 2 Plate event, but to extend that experience long after they leave. Our idea is to provide an opportunity for yoga enthusiasts to come together and meet other people in the area that share their same interests,” Deanne Kong explains. “Our event will be a complete sensory experience, from the flickering candlelight and décor as you enter the room right through to the smells and sights of the shared food platters presented on wooden boards. We want to encourage our guests to mingle and get to know each other and make new friends at our events”.

Russell and Deanne believe in supporting local businesses and will be working with a selection of restaurants in Adelaide that serve high quality local produce and instructors from the various yoga studios in the area to createcommunity-oriented activities and regional events.  Their launch event will be held at Entropy in Thebarton, abeautiful restaurant space that serves 100% local SA produce. From there their event will pop-up at other select premium and unique local venues.  Mat 2 Plate will begin with monthly yoga events that are open to the general public, but their plans are bigger than that. “Eventually, we want to provide classes tailored to specific niche markets including singles events, private corporate functions and food and wine events at local wineries.”
