A boutique South Australian winery will have its wines served to business class passengers onboard Qatar Airways after winning a competitive tender.
Mitolo Wines, a family-run business producing McLaren Vale wines, will supply one of the world’s leading airlines with its acclaimed Jester Shiraz 2012 between October 2015 and March 2016.
More than 10,000 bottles of the Jester Shiraz 2012 have been shipped to the Qatar Airways base in Doha and will be served on all the airline’s routes which zig-zag across the globe to more than 140 destinations, including Johannesburg, Chicago, London and Tokyo.
Experts appointed by the airline meet twice a year in Germany and spend three days blind testing more than 300 wines to handpick vintages from the world’s best producers for passengers to enjoy.
The wine menu available changes regularly and current selections include Chassagne-Montrachet 2007 from Albert Bichot in France’s Burgundy region, Wakefields Down 2011 from Babich Marlborough in New Zealand and the Erdener Treppchen Spatlese 2008 from Dr Loosen in Germany.
Mitolo Wines Founder Frank Mitolo said the vigorous tender process highlighted the quality of the Jester Shiraz 2012 and provided valuable international exposure for the wine.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to extend the reach of our wines, in particular the Jester Shiraz 2012, and have more people try our offerings first hand,” Mr Mitolo said.
“We expect thousands of travellers to fly business class with Qatar Airlines during the duration of our contract and are proud our wine has been selected and not only met, but exceeded, expectations during the competitive tender process.”
The Jester Shiraz 2012, which has a RRP of $25, is a full-flavoured wine with dark fruit flavours of plum and blackberry and was awarded 94 points in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2015 and named in Matthew Juke’s 100 Best Australian Wines of 2013/14.
The first wine produced by Mitolo Wines was the 2000 G.A.M. Shiraz and in the years since, almost a dozen more wines have been added to its range.
Qatar Airways was voted Airline of the Year in 2011 and 2012 in the highly-regarded Skytrax industry audit.
