With the support of the City of Onkaparinga, PowerHealth Solutions and other local businesses, South Australia is experiencing a tennis resurgence as the Happy Valley Tennis Club plays host to the City of Onkaparinga ATP Challenger international tennis tournament this week, one of the highest profile tennis events hosted by South Australia.

This men’s professional tennis event is the first Challenger Tour event in the 2015 season on the Australia/Asia Tennis Tour Calendar. It is part of the Australian Pro Tour series and a vital lead-in event for players heading to Melbourne for the Australian Open Grand Slam later this month.

Players will be competing for a slice of the USD$50,000 in prize money provided by the City of Onkaparinga, as well as up to 80 ranking points. The tournament has attracted 2 former-world-top 20-players Marcos Baghdatis (formerly World #8) and Paul-Henri Mathieu (formerly World #12) who are both attempting comebacks in 2015.

Tennis SA figures show that the event would attract more than 800 international visitors and 2000 visitors across Australia. Tennis SA Chief Executive, Steve Baldas, said that tournament had the potential to inject $1.4m into the region.

Jason Simmons from Tennis Australia said the timing and valuable ranking points on offer ensured it was a quality event for South Australia. He explained "These ATP-level events provide a very important springboard for players to move up the rankings."

City of Onkaparinga Mayor, Lorraine Rosenberg is fully behind the event as she opened the tournament at the Sponsors Dinner on Sunday 4th January. She said "The City of Onkaparinga is delighted to be supporting and hosting the ATP Challenger event in 2015. The tournament provides a fantastic opportunity for locals to watch the world’s up-and-coming players close to home and for these tennis players to experience our wonderful region and all it has to offer."
