Strathalbyn horse Ustinov’s Fury took home yesterday’s Langhorne Creek Vignerons’ Cup capping off a day of local success stories at the popular event’s 21st birthday.

A crowd of more than 2000 watched Ustinov’s Fury, trained by Fleurieu Peninsula trainer Shane Oxlade, win the Cup and cheered parochially as Strathalbyn-based jockey Jamie Kah rode two winners under the bright spring sun.

Chilled whites and bubbles were the pick of the trackside wines at the picturesque Strathalbyn Racecourse, while gourmet bites from Squid Inc and Andre’s Gnocchi Bar were among punters’ favourite snacks.

Adelaide-based band the Happy Leonards produced a rocking set that had racegoers tapping their toes to catchy tunes throughout the afternoon.

Strathalbyn Racing Club chairman Clynt Johansen said he was thrilled with how the day went both on and off the track.

“We’re really proud of what trainers, jockeys and horses from our area were able to achieve in front of their home crowd,” Clynt said.

“The atmosphere trackside was fantastic, everyone was enjoying themselves and we couldn’t have asked for better weather or a more impressive way to celebrate our 21st birthday.”

Robyn Follett, of Lake Breeze Wines, said the event was a prime opportunity to showcase her winery’s work.

“We had a fabulous day, it was so well-organised and a great way to introduce people, or reacquaint them, to our wines,” Robyn said.

“We were lucky enough to enjoy the Eden Marquee and it was a great networking opportunity for us. We were so pleased so many people got to enjoy our wines.”

The exclusive Eden Marquee, at the event for a second time, was among the day’s biggest hits.

Guests mingled in a luxurious and modern setting and indulged in a mouth-watering grazing menu from Andre’s Cucina and Polenta Bar which featured Cape Jervis calamari, Mount Compass marron, Normanville Hayfield lamb and Italian donuts.

Wines by well-known labels Bleasdale, Bremerton, Hand Crafted by Geoff Hardy, Howlin’ Gale, Lake Breeze and The Winehouse were available on the day by the bottle or glass.
