The following free public lectures will be held at the University of Adelaide in the coming weeks.

1) Research Tuesdays Seminar Series: Bumps in le Night

University of Adelaide French studies lecturer Associate Professor Ben McCann will unravel the confronting subversive themes of 21st century French horror cinema in the November 2014 Research Tuesdays seminar.

Associate Professor McCann will discuss how beneath the chills and thrills there is always something interesting going on in French horror – the vampire is a metaphor for AIDS, the zombie represents consumerism and home invasions are a reflection of border security fears.

2) Australia’s Energy Future – technology leader or follower?

Innovative technology development and national energy policy will be under discussion at this inaugural lecture and discussion forum presented by the University’s Centre for Energy Technology and School of Mechanical Engineering.

The Sam Luxton Memorial Lecture honours clean energy champion Professor Russell Escourt ‘Sam” Luxton (1933-2013). It will feature Grattan Institute Energy Program Director Professor Tony Wood, CET Director Professor Gus Nathan and a video introduction from Rocky Mountain Institute Chief Scientist Amory Lovins.

3) 2013 Prime Minister’s Science Prize winner: mathematics and instructing our DNA

2013 Prime Minister’s Science Prize winner and eminent statistician Professor Terry Speed will talk about the ‘new frontier’ of epigenetics and the role of mathematics in understanding the differences in how our DNA is expressed.

Professor Speed, from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, is giving the 2014 Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute annual lecture tour.
