Camberwell’s craft beer credentials are on the rise. Mairead Kennedy, a self-described ‘craft beermonger’, has just opened Far Side Beers on Burke Road, a craft beer retail shop catering in equal measure to beer geeks who embrace the flavors of the Far Side, or those who simply want great lawnmower beer from Victoria’s fantastic independent craft breweries.
It should come as no surprise then that beer from Mikkeller (a Danish brewing company beloved by beer lovers) was flowing at Far Side’s opening night, alongside the first exclusive tasting of beer from Ireland’s World Beer Cup medal winning brewery, Eight Degrees Brewing, beer literally from the Far Side of the world.
Far Side Beers is a playful reference to Kennedy’s strong desire to source beers from the far side of the globe, including her Irish homeland. In addition, Mairead chose the name to represent the passionate and innovative brewers that push the boundaries and produce beers from the far sides of the flavor wheel.
Mairead arrived in Melbourne two years ago, and while living in Camberwell found herself driving to Richmond and beyond in search of good craft beer.
‘I like to try a different beer style every time I visit a bottle shop and I’m often looking to match that beer with specific food, I just couldn’t get the variety I wanted in Camberwell’ says Kennedy.
Pushing past Camberwell’s ‘dry’ heritage, Mairead seized the opportunity to open a business that allows her to live and breathe her passion for great beer. Mairead recently quit a twenty-year career in manufacturing where she was the Engineering Director for global companies such as Pfizer, Amgen and GSK.
Of her crafty job hop, Mairead says‘ I don’t see this career change as a risk, while overall beer consumption in Australia is declining, a recent report by Roy Morgan states that the proportion of Australians aged 18 and over who consume local craft beer in any given four weeks has quietly increased over the last five years, from 3.5 per cent in the year to March 2010 to 5.7 per cent.
People want choice and they want to feel more connected to the origins of their products
I want to give my customers an exceptional experience when they visit my shop, they can leave having tasted a sample of something a little bit different or knowing a little bit more about the brewer and the ingredients used to produce their favorite beer’
Far Side Beers is more than just a bottle shop, according to Mairead; she will stock only exceptional craft beer sourced from independent brewers.
What side are you on? The Far Side looks good from where I’m standing
