Top Chef Winner Lands in Bali
Seminyak, Bali – Since its successful launch earlier this year, Jenja, Bali’s novel addition to its vivacious nightlife scene, has answered to the high anticipation of Seminyak’s clubbing crowd looking for a unique and sophisticated venue for gatherings, gigs and revelry. The venue recently and ultimately expanded to include Upstairs at Jenja, affirming the whole two-level venue as Bali’s one-stop dining and entertainment destination for the cosmopolite, the traveller and music lover who’s in for a whole new experience on the island.
One of its kind, Upstairs at Jenja offers an ultra stylish dining experience with Middle Eastern cuisine brought to you by none other than the winner of Top Chef Middle East 2012, Chef Selma AbuAlia. The young, gorgeous and talented Jordanian-born chef presents flavoursome cuisine from her heritage home, with a few twists and innovations, through a menu that is set to win the hearts and palates of gourmands and travellers yearning for a dining experience in Bali out of the ordinary, as well as clubbers feeling peckish before descending to the lively gigs downstairs.
Having grown up in a family with a passion for cooking, Selma naturally has a practical and hands-on experience in the kitchen. She pursued the arts further at the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts in Jordan, while undergoing a stint at the Movenpick Hotel & Resort in Tala Bay, Aqaba. Even during her graduating semester, the budding chef also managed to extend additional hours at one of Amman’s finest restaurants, Vinaigrette by ATICO group.
Graduating from the Academy in 2011, the budding chef was able to develop her palate for food and enrich her creativity while working with unfamiliar ingredients and flavours from around the world, before ultimately being selected as among the professional chefs from the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region to compete in the Top Chef Middle East – and walked out champion with a cash prize of $50,000, a 4-month culinary internship in Australia, training in London and a guaranteed job at The Atlantis in Dubai.
Following various stints in the Middle East, she flew down eight degrees south of the equator, to the island of Bali, where she now heads the culinary brigade at the dazzling-new Upstairs at Jenja. Together they have collaborated on an eclectic menu featuring flavoursome pieces of art-on-a-plate. Must-tries at Upstairs at Jenja include her takes on bulgur, moussaka and sayadieh, as well as the tasty ‘Middle Eastern Surprise’ of slow roasted leg of lamb marinated in coffee, cardamom and dates.
The menu at Upstairs at Jenja also features seafood and vegetarian selections, as well as great sharing options for families or circles of friends. Chef Selma only incorporates high quality ingredients in her creations, comprising premium meat cuts, poultry and fresh seafood – assuring connoisseurs only the best of dining experiences while in Bali’s upscale beach resort of Seminyak.
